In July 1779, Brigadier General Anthony Wayne led his troops in a daring attack on British forces at Stony Point. Almost 240 years later this Saturday, we’ll attack a few hills and stop somewhere for a leisurely lunch on this ride from Nyack Memorial Park to Stony Point State Park.
The route north is via 9W, down through Haverstraw then following the river roads to Stony Point. Route back is via Strawtown Road. Total distance is about 38 miles.
Jul 22: An “Away Game,” Bear Mtn to Cold Spring
This week, we will follow where the Bear Went Over The Mountain. Sort of.
On Saturday we’ll meet up near Bear Mountain and ride to Cold Spring in Putnam County. We’ll start at the Jones Point parking area on 9W (aka the “Ramapo-Dunderburg Trailhead”). If anyone wants to carpool (or needs a ride) from Nyack, we can still meet up at Memorial Park — but we should do that at 7:45a to allow enough time to get to the start point for the ride.
The Jones Point Parking area is on 9W at the bottom of the hill leading up to Bear Mountain. The lot is located just past River Road on the left side as you travel north. The starting point is about a 30 min drive from Nyack.
Saturday’s route will cross the Bear Mountain Bridge taking Route 9D to Cold Spring. It’s about 30 miles round trip. (more…)
Sat July 15: Zoo Wanna Go For A Bike Ride to Van San Park?
This will be one animal ride. We can’t promise Tigers and Bears (oh My!) but there will be mountain lions, alligators, bison, eagles, prairie dogs, spider monkeys and more. Join us on Saturday when we ride to the Bergen County Zoo at Van Saun Park in Paramus, NJ. It’s about a 33 mile round trip. Not counting any additional mileage you may add taking the kids’ train around the park or riding the carousel.
July 8: Turn The Beat Around…Nanuet
One of the best things about cycling is that when you run out of ideas for new routes, you can recycle your fave rides — backwards. We’ll ride around Lake Tappan this week but spin up from Western Hwy to Sickletown Road and return through Orangeburg.
July 1: The All Rockland “Hi Tor Hi-Ho”
Let’s keep this in the county, OK?
On Sat July 1 we’ll ride a Rockland County circuit that includes Piermont, Little Tor, The Orchards of Concklin and Rockland Lake covering about 35 miles.
There are two climbs, up Little Tor Road from South Mountain and then over The Hook on 9W. Route is to Piermont, Clarke Rail Trail to Western Hwy, Strawtown Rd, South Mountain. Then we proceed up Little Tor to Phillips Hill, Main Street, Old 304, Goebbels to 304 to Old Haverstraw Road into Congers to Lake Street then to Rockland Lake. And back!

Away Game: Ride the Hills of Harriman State Park
It’s always good to spice things up with a different starting point every once in a while. This week, let’s meet up in Harriman State Park (if anyone wants to ride share from Nyack, we can do that too!)
The starting point is the Reeves Meadow Information Center on Seven Lakes Drive near Rt 17 in Harriman State Park (it has free parking!) We’ll ride Seven Lakes Drive to the Palisades Parkway spinning up and coasting down about 1,600 feet of elevation. Since there is no place to buy refreshments (except for vending machines at Tiorati Circle), bring enough water and a snack.
Directions to Reeves Meadow Information Center – Take Rt 17 North, turn right on Seven Lakes Drive. The Visitors Center and parking lot is about a mile and a half on the right. (more…)
June 10: Strictly Bikes in Ft Lee
The line at Farm Boys, a breakfast vendor stop along the road during RAGBRAI 2014. Bike Nyack hasn’t quite reached the popularity of the 10,000 cyclists who ride the annual (Des Moines) Register-Great-Bike-Ride-Across-Iowa, but give it some time, you never know… :>)
Let’s Meetup at 830 at Memorial Park in Nyack and ride to Strictly Bikes in Ft Lee, NJ.
Route is down Piermont Avc and 9W to Strictly Bikes in Ft Lee. On the way back, we might take a Hudson Drive for a pretty ride along the river.
Bring water bottles, your helmet and tire fixins’
Rain rules: if it’s raining 30 minutes before ride time, it’s called. And if rain is predicted after the start of the ride on WeatherUnderground.com, it is also called.
June 3: The Two States Of Lake Tappan
Two states, two counties, two wheels and one big reservoir. Join us for a fun Sat morning spin from Nyack to Nanuet via North Jersey where we will circle where Lake Tappan straddles NY and NJ.
This ride starts at 830a in Nyack at Memorial Park — meet at the corner of Piermont and Depew. We’ll follow the river South and turn at Sparkill and proceed West through Tappan, Old Tappan (NJ), River Vale. Then we cross Veterans Memorial Highway by Blue Hill Golf Course and take Sickletown Rd. Right before Rt 59 we turn right and circle back on Western Highway. Return via Bradley Parkway with a less hilly option of Western Hwy and the Clark Rail Trail if the group prefers.
Bring your helmet, water and flat fixins. Approx distance 25 miles, avg see 15 mph. Questions? Email dave@NyackNewsAndViews.com. (more…)
Sat May 27: Hackensack River Route To Oradell
The ride takes us through mostly residential streets with a stretch that hugs the Oradell reservoir, which is connected by the Hackensack River to Lake Tappan and Lake DeForest. We’ll stop, rest and regroup in Schirra Park — named after hometown hero and Mercury 7 astronaut Wally Schirra. (It’s next to a great bagel shop and across the street from a cupcake concession, too).
