May 17: Rockland Bike Club Annual “Ride of Silence”

Ride of Silence on Wednesday May 17 at 6:30p in coordination with the international Ride Of Silence.

Participants are encouraged to ride with White Lights in Front & Red Lights in Rear

Add your voice to the call for respect on the roads. The Ride will start and end at the Rockland County Courthouse in New City, the county seat.

Why We Ride

2013 Rockland Bicycle Club “Ride of Silence”

The ride honors and remembers bicycle riders who have been killed or injured in collisions with cars and calls on everyone to share the road safely. We’re gratified that no cyclists were killed or badly injured on Rockland County’s roads in 2016, unlike in other recent years. It’s hoped that can be attributed to the combination of growing awareness by motorists and the county’s adoption of a Complete Streets initiative. Join us in remembering Edward Brophy, William “Matt” George, Alfred Zaldivar, Janet Martinez, Robert Carl Pinckert, Ennio Spiri and the many other Rockland County residents hurt and killed in collisions with motorists in the recent past. We ride to honor them; we ride to enforce the message for all road users that Mutual Respect Saves Lives.

Lights are encouraged – red lights on the rear, white lights on the front of your bike. Helmets are required. We will ride no faster than 12 mph, follow the rules of the road and remain silent during the ride. There are no sponsors and no registration fees for the Ride of Silence. We will ride 5.6 miles silently and single file. Police support will be provided.

Please ride with us to help call for respect on the roadways. And help spread the word — or help organize and promote this event. Police support will be provided for the RBC Ride of Silence. More event details at

May 20: Westward to Westwood (NJ)

A community that calls itself “the Hub of Pascack Valley” will be the destination for us Folks With Spokes on Sat morning May 20. We’ll meet up at Nyack Memorial Park at 8:30a for a 25 mile spin to Westwood, NJ.

WestwoodNJGazebo_remax-njWestwood has a quaint downtown, a central park with a gazebo and its own stop on the Pascack Valley line of NJ Transit. It also straddles the banks of the Hackensack River, but to be honest, its old banks located in historic buildings are more impressive than the Hackensack, which is more of a creek than a river as it passes through Westwood.

May 6: Bicycle New Year!

Happy New Year! May is Bike Month — which means it’s the official beginning of the Bike New Year (does that mean all of our Strava rides prior to now don’t count? :>)

Our season opener is an easy 25 mile loop over hill and across a dale to Hillsdale, NJ. Our turnaround point is the popular stop and nosh spot, Ronnie’s Bagels. Meet up at 830a at the corner of Depew & Piermont Aves adjacent to Nyack’s Memorial Park.

Distance is about 25 miles. This is a “no drop” ride. All riders welcome. Helmets required. Remember to bring water bottle and repair stuff for flats.

Route is through Piermont, Tappan, Old Tappan (NJ), River Vale and Hillsdale.

A word about da weather:  If it’s raining 30 minutes before ride time, it’s called. Also, if the forecast on calls for series showers after the ride starts, go back to bed!

Distance: about 30 miles
Route: Nyack, Piermont, Tenafly, River Vale
Meetup at Nyack Bike Outfitters, 72 N Broadway in Nyack at 9a. Leave by 915a from Runcible Spoon (one block south).

Winter Is Coming. So remember toe caps, bike gloves that cover your fingers and a headband to cover your ears. Those extremities can get chilled even if Sunday’s temp will be in the mid-40’s!
