This week, we will follow where the Bear Went Over The Mountain. Sort of.
On Saturday we’ll meet up near Bear Mountain and ride to Cold Spring in Putnam County. We’ll start at the Jones Point parking area on 9W (aka the “Ramapo-Dunderburg Trailhead”). If anyone wants to carpool (or needs a ride) from Nyack, we can still meet up at Memorial Park — but we should do that at 7:45a to allow enough time to get to the start point for the ride.
This will be one animal ride. We can’t promise Tigers and Bears (oh My!) but there will be mountain lions, alligators, bison, eagles, prairie dogs, spider monkeys and more. Join us on Saturday when we ride to the Bergen County Zoo at Van Saun Park in Paramus, NJ. It’s about a 33 mile round trip. Not counting any additional mileage you may add taking the kids’ train around the park or riding the carousel.
One of the best things about cycling is that when you run out of ideas for new routes, you can recycle your fave rides — backwards. We’ll ride around Lake Tappan this week but spin up from Western Hwy to Sickletown Road and return through Orangeburg.
There are two climbs, up Little Tor Road from South Mountain and then over The Hook on 9W. Route is to Piermont, Clarke Rail Trail to Western Hwy, Strawtown Rd, South Mountain. Then we proceed up Little Tor to Phillips Hill, Main Street, Old 304, Goebbels to 304 to Old Haverstraw Road into Congers to Lake Street then to Rockland Lake. And back!
It’s always good to spice things up with a different starting point every once in a while. This week, let’s meet up in Harriman State Park (if anyone wants to ride share from Nyack, we can do that too!)
The starting point is the Reeves Meadow Information Center on Seven Lakes Drive near Rt 17 in Harriman State Park (it has free parking!) We’ll ride Seven Lakes Drive to the Palisades Parkway spinning up and coasting down about 1,600 feet of elevation. Since there is no place to buy refreshments (except for vending machines at Tiorati Circle), bring enough water and a snack.
