Sat Aug 12: A Ride That’s Closter To Rockland

This week’s route has a little bit of everything: NY, NJ, a state park, a rail trail and a cute coffee stop in Closter, NJ. After meeting up at 830a at Nyack Memorial Park, we’ll ride south with an optional spin through Tallman State Park. We’ll ride 9W south to Tenafly and turn on Clinton Ave (viva la downhill!) and then turn back north on County Rd and Piermont Rd. It’s a 30 mile route on this no drop ride.

New policy: We need to leave on time! Please show up at 8:25 for this 8:30 ride so we can hit the road without delay (if you snooze you won’t cruise!)

Starting point is Nyack Memorial Park at the corner of Piermont & Depew Aves. Make sure you bring your helmet, have food, 1-2 bottles of water and anything necessary for bike repair (air pump/CO2, tubes, patch kit, etc.) This is a no-drop ride.

Wondering Weather Or Not We Will Ride? If rain threatens and you are wondering “weather” or not we are going to ride…if it’s raining 30 minutes before start time, go back to bed. Same decision if storms are predicted during the time we will be riding. Check WeatherUnderground.com for radar and an hour by hour forecast.

Looking ahead: It’s an away game on Sat Aug 19: We’ll meetup at Stricly Bikes in Fort Lee and take advantage of Park Ave being closed to traffic for “Citi Summer Streets” in NYC. Destination Brooklyn. Watch this space next week for details!

August 5: Rain Rain Go Away!

No ride this week as the chance or rain on Sat morning varies by hour — between 80% and 100%.

Looking ahead to next week. For the next three Saturdays, Citi Streets closes Park Ave to cars from midtown to the Brooklyn Bridge. Who’s up for a ride from the GWB to NYC?

In July 1779, Brigadier General Anthony Wayne led his troops in a daring attack on British forces at Stony Point. Almost 240 years later this Saturday, we’ll attack a few hills and stop somewhere for a leisurely lunch on this ride from Nyack Memorial Park to Stony Point State Park.

The route north is via 9W, down through Haverstraw then following the river roads to Stony Point. Route back is via Strawtown Road. Total distance is about 38 miles.

Jul 22: An “Away Game,” Bear Mtn to Cold Spring

BearMtn201203This week, we will follow where the Bear Went Over The Mountain. Sort of.

On Saturday we’ll meet up near Bear Mountain and ride to Cold Spring in Putnam County. We’ll start at the Jones Point parking area on 9W (aka the “Ramapo-Dunderburg Trailhead”).  If anyone wants to carpool (or needs a ride) from Nyack, we can still meet up at Memorial Park — but we should do that at 7:45a to allow enough time to get to the start point for the ride.

The Jones Point Parking area is on 9W at the bottom of the hill leading up to Bear Mountain. The lot is located just past River Road on the left side as you travel north. The starting point is about a 30 min drive from Nyack.

Saturday’s route will cross the Bear Mountain Bridge taking Route 9D to Cold Spring. It’s about 30 miles round trip.  (more…)

Away Game: Ride the Hills of Harriman State Park

It’s always good to spice things up with a different starting point every once in a while. This week, let’s meet up in Harriman State Park (if anyone wants to ride share from Nyack, we can do that too!)
